If You Build It, They Will Come

I went to my first ever Bonfire last night and it was awesome! It was out in the West desert and in our group, Mark (a friend) and I both drove. It was 99 miles away and according to Nick, took us an hour and 20 min. Apparently he was keeping track?!hahaha! We arrived to our destination, the middle of nowhere, at about 10 pm and were the first ones there. So we chilled and listened to my new car stereo. Then, we heard this car, pulling a very large trailer of junk and dried Christmas trees, honk as it flew past us. Behind them was an endless line of car headlights following behind. It reminded me of field of dreams,
"If you build it, They will come."
So we squeezed our way in the chaos and sped down the dirt road, which I was NOT a fan of bc I was in my 2 day old car, speeding down a path with rocks and dirt flying everywhere. I was getting somewhat behind, keeping a good distance, trying to avoid dents in my hood and Nick turns to me and says, "Hey, the car in front of you is clear up there." I didn't really care though, I was already going 40 in like a 25 mph zone, something like that. Once the actual road ended and we were just driving on sand, everyone was going every which way, I felt like I was in a bumper car track, but in a real car. Yeah, it was a little nerve racking, but we all made it safely and everyone began mingling trying to find friends. The boys went right to work, assembling the VERY LARGE pile of junk into a mound. More people continued coming and more trailers lined up. There was so much stuff, we didn't even get the thing lit until about midnight!
But when they did light it, after singing the national anthem, it was something I had never seen before. It lit up so quickly and was humongous. Everyone gathered near bc by that time we were all freezing cold. We stayed and meandered a bit, talked and enjoyed ourselves by the rumbling fire towering over our heads. A few times the bonfire made exploding noises, shooting out sparks and everyone would quickly back away. Then when it was over, we would get close again....I know, real smart. But it was a lot of fun, there were random fireworks and glow sticks flying through the air and a couple of flares. Beer pong was going on to the side while another group pulled out the Dr. Pepper and a few were kicking around a soccer ball that was lit on fire. Plus a couple of other things I would rather not mention:) But all in all it was a good time, even though we didn't get home until 3 am and I had to be up the next morning to coach, it was worth it. I can now say I have been to a bonfire and in the meantime, met some really nice friends in my new ward.
Me * Amy * Amy * Jill (PS they are not burning the flag...they were running around the fire holding it high for all to see.) What an adventure!
