Spider Fact

If you know me well, you know I absolutely hate spiders! A lot. So you may wonder why I am about to do a post about Brown Recluse and Hobo Spiders. Well, I have a little piece of information that I would like to share. Many people confuse these two types of spiders with one another. People often say there are Brown Recluse Spiders here in Utah. Brown Recluses and Hobo Spiders do look alike and their bite symptoms are quite similar.
But. . .I have news for you. . .

Fact:
Brown Recluse Spiders are ONLY found in the Southern - Central part of the US.

Fact: Public awareness of these [Hobo] spiders has been surprisingly low, primarily because the Brown Recluse Spider has been inaccurately blamed for the bites that people receive from Hobo Spiders.

Fact: The Brown Recluse typically only bites when forced onto someones body such as caught in their clothes when putting them on or rolling over on top of them in their sleep. They bite in defense. Hobo spiders on the other hand, are noticeably more aggressive towards humans. This is because of their poor eyesight; they don't know the difference between a human and their prey.

Fact: The Brown Recluse builds its web in a comb shape and is built for nesting purposes only, not as an insect trap. They are typically found in dark spots, never out in the open. Whereas the Hobo Spider builds a 'Trip Nest' and they are funnel shaped often attached to stationary objects that are low to the ground, such as plants or the sidings of homes.

Fact: Their Bite. With both types of spiders, you don't feel their bite and typically many don't realize you have even been bitten at the time. A Hobo Spider bite will blister, break open and then form an oozing ulceration. A Brown Recluse bite will cause necrosis (death of cells and living tissue) and create a deep lesion in the skin. The Brown Recluse bite can be fatal and also weaken your immune system.

This is were I got my facts. . . http://www.brownreclusespider.org/ & http://www.hobospider.com/info/index.html
